Woodwork

“Our Tutors are skilled professionals who encourage proficiency
in practical techniques and skills”

Woodwork

During our Woodwork sessions, Skillway students are taught to identify the relevant tools and equipment and learn how to use and care for them. They will be challenged to improve their coordination and motor skills through the use of hand tools, alongside developing the skill to operate larger power tools and typical workshop machinery.

Our Wood Workshop is equipped with a good selection of basic machinery that you could expect to see in a professional environment and includes routers, drills, sanders and even lathes for a spin at woodturning. Students will be taught and guided by our skilled tutors and volunteers to make craft projects by following a plan that includes the steps to success such as dimensions, materials and tools required.

Our tutors are skilled professionals who, supported by knowledgeable volunteers, encourage proficiency in practical techniques and skills as well as nurturing a student’s self-esteem and positive attitude towards their work. They will demonstrate the different jointing techniques and the use of various finishing methods required for each project.

Each student will learn to make simple projects which they take home when complete, with every subsequent project adding to a student’s skillset and building their portfolio of achievements. Many students will go on to Woodworking and Joinery courses at College and may go on to work in the trades. Others will simply use their newfound confidence and skills to take the next step, whether this is applying to College, or entering the world of work.
