Volunteer at Skillway

“Volunteering at Skillway adds a lot to your own life, as well as knowing you are helping young people who need it.”

“The reward for you is knowing that you have helped at least one young person onto a road leading to employability, a happier life, and better integration into the community; a life of “Can Do” rather than “What’s the point?”

Hands-on Learning Supported by Valuable Volunteers

Our Tutors and more importantly, our students, are supported every day by volunteers who bring a unique combination of experience and skill both in their knowledge of craft and their wider life. Our volunteers at Skillway bring value to the students we serve through the development of their practical skills, and equally as importantly to their personal growth.

You do not need to be an expert in a craft or trade to support Skillway (but it doesn’t hurt if you are!). If you possess some of these attributes you will be an important help to our mission…

  • Enjoy working and building relationships with young people
  • Be enthusiastic, have patience and listen without judgement
  • Be of a practical nature, but no need for qualifications
  • Enjoy the camaraderie of other like-minded volunteers
  • Have empathy with young people who struggle with academic education
  • Have an acceptance that everybody learns differently

What to Expect

Our day runs from 9:30 – 14:30. We ask that our volunteers give us a minimum of  half a day a week to support our students, and that this is the same day each week to enable both you and the students to build positive, effective relationships.

You can expect to be engaged, challenged, amused and hopefully inspired by our students, and motivated by the progress you help students to achieve. To see a young person develop professionally and personally is a joy and we hope that you feel compelled to join us and be a part of it yourself.

    Interested? What to do next

We are a Charity with no government funding, reliant on volunteers, donors, and grant-makers for our income which all goes to support the teenagers who need our help. Please get in touch with Jack, Head of Operations, to arrange a visit for you to see the workshops in action and talk through what your offer of support could look like.
